Additions to the 2018/2019 Winter List
Note: The date specified on the left is the date when I added the species to the list. Unless otherwise specified, this is also the date when the species was observed.
Mar 11, 2019 | Brown Thrasher / Moqueur roux | - Quispamsis area (Quispamsis CBC results - Dec 29) |
6:15 PM 148 species |
Hoary Redpoll / Sizerin blanchâtre | - Memramcook (Marco Vachon - Feb 8) - Losier Settlement (Rosemonde Duguay, Denise Godin, Jolande St-Pierre - Feb 12 |
Additional species that were reported but not counted in the results for the 2018-2019 winter period:
Dunlin |
- Castalia, Grand Manan (Roger Burrows - Dec 31) Roger Burrows reported a probable Dunlin at Castalia on Dec 31; however, the bird was reported as a "probable" which meant the ID was uncertain so I chose not to include it in the totals but did feel it should be listed with question mark indicating that one was reported but the there was uncertainty to the ID.

|
Broad-winged Hawk |
- Cape Tormentine CBC (4 observers - Dec 15) There was a Broad-winged Hawk reported on the Cape Tormentine CBC and subsequently reported on eBird; however, after reading the description provided on eBird, I do not feel the description provides enough detail to rule out a possible first year Red-shouldered Hawk. Based on the comments provided, it appears that many other species were considered and ruled out but Red-shouldered Hawk does not appear to be one of the species considered and this is the species most likely to be mistaken for a Broad-winged Hawk in the winter. I still felt it was worth including in the list with a question mark to indicate that a possible Broad-winged Hawk had been reported but there was uncertainty to the ID.

Name Changes, other changes and corrections   (Top of page)
Nov 26, 2018: | Added Common Shelduck to the 2016/2017 winter list as the species has now been reviewed and accepted by the NB Bird Records Committee and will be added to the NB Checklist in the near future. This also increases the winter list total for the 2016/2017 period to 169 and increases our cumulative total to 269. Also, a few species have had either their English or French names changed this year with the latest update to the American Ornithological Society (AOS) Checklist (or in a previous update without my knowledge): - the English name for Gray Jay has been changed to Canada Jay (59th supplement to the AOS Checklist - Aug 2018) - the French name for Northern Shrike has changed from Pie-grièche grise to Pie-grièche boréale (58th supplement to the AOS Checklist - Aug 2017) - the French name for Yellow-breasted Chat has changed from Paruline polyglotte to Ictérie polyglotte (58th supplement to the AOS Checklist - Aug 2017) TAXONOMY CHANGES: the order of families and species in the checklist has also been updated to match the current taxonomic order of the American Ornithological Society's (AOS) Checklist of North American Birds. Many of these changes were made several years ago by the AOS but I had not taken the time to make those updates to the winter list website until now.
